Why Starting is the Hardest but the Most Important Step

Yes, rubbish! I set out on a journey to learn a new skill, and I have to admit it was a rough start. I absolutely sucked at it. Terrible, actually. The frustration and anxiety quickly set in as I realised it was taking much longer than I had anticipated. I had thought I would have completed this by lunchtime and I had barely started.

As the morning turned into afternoon, I felt exhaustion and imposter syndrome setting in. By lunchtime, I had to start all over again. It was challenging, but there was also a stubbornness in me that insisted I had to get good at this.

I realised I had been trying to rush it—"more haste, less speed, Alex" ringing in my ears. Giving up was not an option. I took a little walk, a deep breath, and approached the task with a fresh perspective. I thought to myself, "This is important. If it takes two days or even a week, it's worth it." Then, something amazing happened. As I slowed down and took it step by step, things began to click. I started to see patterns and understand the finer details. It was like a light bulb went off in my head, lighting the path forward.

By mid-afternoon, I found myself really getting to grips with it. Each small success built upon the last, and my confidence grew. I’m not an expert yet—far from it. I’m still a beginner and will be for a while, but that’s okay. I’ve learned that improvement comes with practice and persistence. The more I do it, the better I’ll get, and the more I’ll learn.

It’s important to remind ourselves that mastery doesn’t happen overnight. I’ll probably never be amazing at this skill, but that’s not the point. What matters is that it will become second nature to me soon enough. Each time I practice, it will get a little easier and better.

What I Learned:

  • Start Slow: Rushing leads to mistakes and frustration. Take your time and be patient. If it's important it deserves your time.

  • Embrace Imperfection: It's okay to be terrible at first. Improvement comes with practice.

  • Persistence is Key: Keep pushing through the tough moments. Stubbornness can be an asset.

  • Step by Step: Break the task into smaller steps. Celebrate each small success.

  • Learn from Mistakes: Every mistake is a learning opportunity. Reflect on what went wrong and how to improve.

  • Fear is Normal: Feeling afraid or doubtful is part of the process. Acknowledge it but don't let it stop you.

  • Consistency Over Time: Mastery doesn’t happen overnight. Consistent effort leads to progress.

  • Reflect and Adapt: Regularly reflect on your progress and adapt your approach as needed.

  • Stay Positive: A positive mindset can transform your learning experience. You can't afford the luxury of a negative thought.

  • Seek Support: Don't hesitate to ask for help or advice from others.

Reflecting on the day, I can’t help but think: what if I hadn’t started? Fear of failure could have held me back, but now I’m one skill up. It’s a small step, but progress.

So, what’s that one thing you’ve always wanted to start but haven’t? What’s holding you back? Fear, time, uncertainty? Take that first step. You might be rubbish at first, like I was, but that’s okay.
